Haerr, cashier of the Citizens Na A Spellbinder Gives Hi View of the Situation in lows. B. I. Salinger, of Manning, who has been about the 6tate a good deal lately, is in the city attending harvest festival. He last night gave a JotmnAL reporter his opinion on the political situation in Iowa.

"I think that the almighty has used Iowa too well this year for the democrats," he said. "Nobody can figure out the result of a tariff bill the proof of the pudding is in chewing the string and the farmers feel so good that they think the McKinley bill is all right. I don't see that anybody can complain of their reasoning. The calamity crowd has taught them that congress waa responsible for the crops. Then nobody seems to care much about studying the democratic platform.

It seems to be quite generally felt that it doesn't mean much whatever it says. You see after slobbering over the farmer and the soldier they put up a lawyer for governor, and abuse Wheeler and Van Houten. "Another thing that has struck me is that there is scarcely any local faction. I guess our licking has made us unanimous. "I believe that we have lost all the anti-prohibition republicans that can be lost and will get lota of the lost ones back.

Gov. Larrabee told me last week that J. K. Graves wrote him that 1,500 republicans in Dubuque county who had voted for Boies had got enough of it. You bear quite a good deal of muttering among democrats on Boies' appointments, and he is bound to have some trouble on that score that he, of course, did not have before.

Many who left us to see if that would not bring us to their views on the liquor question are not pleased with the governor's way of breaking down the law and believe that he is not sincere. "A lawyer in my district told a democratic judge recently that he would not vote for Boies again because he didn't know two years ago that Boies was a hypocrite. Of course, that grade of men reason and they are afraid to trust our democracy with the redisricting in the ante chamber of a national contest. "I feel certain that Wheeler, will go in, but it may not be by great odds. There is still a good deal of republican apathy." tional bank at Mankato, is in town.
