to James "J.W." Ftizgibbons, 78, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services will be 11 a.m Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m.

Wednesday, with Scripture service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Mr. Fitzgibbons was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Sioux Falls.

He moved with his family to Sioux City and graduated from Trinity High School in 1941. He attended Iowa State University. He served in the Armed Forces from 1943 to 1946. He married Rose Clare "Bonnie" Ryan on June 5, 1954, in Sioux Falls. He was employed at different firms at the Sioux Falls Stock Yards, until joining his, father and forming Fitzgibbons' and Son Order Buyers in 1952.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, abled American Veterans and the Elks Club. He served as a former president of the Stockman's Exchange. Survivors include his wife; six sons, Thomas of Minneapolis, James and John, both of St. Paul, and Michael, Patrick and Ryan, all of Sioux Falls; a daughter, Bridget Peterson of Sioux Falls; and 11 grandchildren. Schomberg, 76, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at a Sioux City nursing and rehab center following a lengthy illness. Services will be 10 a.m. today at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Glen Rachuy officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are the direction Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mr. Schomberg was born June 2, 1924, in McLean, Neb. He was raised by his grandparents and graduated from McLean High School.

Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Leona M. Weyhrich on Aug. 11, 1944, in McLean.

They moved to Sioux City in 1944. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad from 1945 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and Coachman RV Club. He enjoyed boating, fishing, bowling and riding bicycle. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Johnson and Sandra Schomberg, both of Sioux City; three granddaughters, Jessica and Mandy Johnson, and April Schomberg; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and an infant son. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Siouxland. Donald E. Schomberg Gerald J.W. Meehlhause Gerald J.W.

Meehlhause, 89, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at ChristySmith Morningside Chapel. Marie G. Groat Marie G.

Groat, 87, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. There will be no services or visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Elmer H.

Weaver Elmer H. Weaver, 81, of Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness. There will be no services or visitation. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Mr. Weaver was born June 14, 1919, in Sioux City, the son of Ralph and Bealah (Smith) Weaver. He attended Sioux City schools. He was employed in construction with various companies in Sioux City for many years.

Survivors include a special friend, Nellie Gilson of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Flory and Walter; and a sister, Nora Johnson. Paul M. Strong, 86, of Topeka, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday; Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Sister Mary Cleopha Murphy Sister Mary Cleopha (Anne Irene) Murphy, 91, of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City and Anthon, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb.

22, 2001, at Servants of Mary in Omaha following a lengthy ill- ness. Services were 26, at Servants of Mary. Burial was in Servants of Mary Cemetery. Sister Mary Cleopha was born Dec. 5, 1909, in Anthon, the daughter of Patrick and Annie (McDermott) Mur- held Mondav 1968 photo phy.

She attended Morningside College in Sioux City and received her teaching certificate. In 1927 she began teaching at a country school. In January 1929, she entered Servants of Mary in Omaha. She taught and served: as principal at Our Lady of Sorrows School in Omaha, Sacred Heart in East St. Louis, Holy Name in Omaha, St.

John Berchmans in Detroit, Sacred Heart in Massena, N. Immaculate ception in Sioux City, Marion High in Omaha, Servite High in Detroit and Mount Carmel in Denver. She retired from teaching in 1995, from Immaculate Conception in Sioux City. She then moved to Servants of Mary in Omaha. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend and colleague, Dr.

Sal LoFaro of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ella Conley, Ethel Banta, Mary Dicus, Willie Murphy, Frankie Murphy, Thomas Murphy and John Murphv. Barbara Johann Barbara (Miller) Johann, 81, of Orange Park, formerly of City, Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Jacksonville, Fla. Services will be 2 p.m.

Wednesday at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Orange Park, with the Rev. Tom Are officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johann was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, P.E.O., Junior League, Ponte Vedra Inn and Club and duplicate bridge Silver Life Master, all in Sioux City. Survivors include her husband, Albert E. Johann a son, Robert three daughters, Susan J. and her husband, Steve Houlik, Mary L.

Loretta E. Plummer The Rev. Loretta E. Plummer, 85, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Central Assembly of God. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Walthill, Neb. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Area Virgil L. Schmidt AKRON, Iowa Virgil L. Schmidt, 63, of Akron died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services were held Monday, Feb.

12, at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Aglona, Iowa, where the Rev. Philip Webb officiated. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Schmidt was born May 16, 1937, in Woden, Iowa, the son of Paul and Lucy (Willet) Schmidt.

He grew up in the Lone Tree and Fenton, Iowa, areas and attended a country school in the area. After his education he held various jobs. He was mainly a mechanic and truck driver. He married Eda Dillon on Sept. 7, 1995, in Elk Point, S.D.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, cribbage, watching nature shows and following the Iowa Hawkeyes. Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Mark and Sue Schmidt of West Des Moines; a daughter and her husband, Natalie and Ron Becker of Bancroft, Iowa; a stepson and his wife, Thomas and Angie Worth of Wellfleet, four grandchildren, Matthew, Jacob, Leah and Geena; six sisters, Margaret Bohn, Alice Weig, Rose Baas, Nellie Phillips, Cyrilla Marti and Verna Penning; a brother, August Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Paul in infancy and Ivan. Pallbearers were Jeffrey Schutjer, Thomas Worth, Patrick Marti, John Phillips, Scott Weig, Ronald Bass, Raymond Penning Jr. and Jerry Bass.

Bruning ONAWA, Iowa Genevieve E. "Gene" Bruning, 95, of Onawa, formerly of Castana, Iowa, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Burgess Care Center in Onawa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St.

Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, with a Scripture service at 8 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa. Visitation will resume one hour prior to Thursday's service at the church. Mrs. Bruning was born July 27, 1905, in St.

Paul, the daughter of William and Sophia (Surrette) Byrne. She married Andrew F. Brun- ing on June 3, 1929, in St. Paul. The couple lived in Omaha before moving to Castana in 1948.

They moved to Onawa in 1968. Her husband died Jan. 9, 1969, in Onawa. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton and a current member of St.

John Catholic Church in Onawa. She also was a member of Castana Thursday Club and Neighborly Pals Birthday Club. Survivors include a son and his wife, Tim and Sue of Castana; three daughters, Janice Wildhaber of Winnetka, Sheila and her husband, Bob Keaten of Randolph, N.J., and Kathleen and her husband, Andrew Zahratka of Pittsburgh; 10 grandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren. Debi Durham, President of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, appeared before the board and presented them with the Blue Ribbon Award from Expansion Management Magazine. The magazine ranks 2,234 school districts and the Blue Ribbon Award is presented to districts in the top onethird nationally. Superintendent Williams thanked the Chamber for its ongoing interest in this district. Board Member Reports- -Director James reported that meetings of the Board Policy Committee have taken place and that several policies have been or soon will be forwarded to the board for their approval. Director Mounts reported that recently she had spent several weeks in an affluent district in Maryland, and that she came home feeling good about our district.

She felt that in certain areas they were not as good as our district. Director Batcheller reported that he had attended the West High School vs. East High School boys' basketball game, as well as attending the swim tournament in Council Bluffs. He watched the East High School girls play the South Sioux City girls. It was really fun to watch the quality of play that night at both the sophomore and varsity levels.

He was proud of the crowd, the refereeing, and the game. Also, he made a trip to Des Moines to visit with our legislators.
