Sioux City Journal, Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003-D1 OBITUARIES Ronald R. Hansen Ronald Roger Hansen, 60, of Bainbridge Island, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. Memorial services will be 11 a.m.

Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Nathan Houfek officiating. Private graveside services will be Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Memorial services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Bainbridge Island. Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home in Bainbridge Island.

Ronald Roger Hansen was born Oct. 9, 1942, in Sioux City, the son of Dwight Wilbur and Lorene (Sorensen) Hansen. He attended Sioux City Public Schools and graduated from East High School. He always had a strong passion for learning. He remained in Sioux City and earned his bachelor of science degree in mathematics and accounting from Morningside College in 1964.

He married Kathryn Helen Mariska on Dec. 17, 1966, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He continued his education at Louisiana State University and received his master's degree in mathematics. He began his career teaching school for eight years in Whiting, Iowa.

He moved to Houston, Texas, and worked for Texas Instruments, Occidental Petroleum and First City Bank where he progressed to information systems audit. He then established the Information System Audit Department at Martin-Marietta and Orlando, and for MCI Corporation in A Denver, in Washington, D.C., where he was executive director of Internal Audit. Having always appreciated nature, he moved to Bainbridge Island to live in the Pacific Northwest. He had a very gracious and welcoming nature and will be remembered by the many people he embraced as a man of great wit and kind heart. Throughout his life, he cared for others and excelled at guiding people toward their full potential in life.

His other great passion was his love of music. With his very distinctive bass voice, he enjoyed singing in many choirs throughout the years. He is survived by his mother, Lorene of Sioux City; his wife, Kathryn Helen of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn of Seattle, four brothers, Robert of Jordan, Craig of New Hope, Brent and his wife, Marilyn of Sioux City, and David and his wife, Debbie of Des Moines; a very special aunt, Bernice Primm of Sioux City; his uncle, Donald Sorensen of Sequim, many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and cousins; and his beloved dog, ChiLon. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church and Compass Center in Seattle. Harry Taylor Harry Taylor, 62, of Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City, died of a heart attack Tuesday, Feb.

11, 2003, at Mercy Capitol in Des Moines. Services were held Saturday, Feb. 15, at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Mr. Taylor was born in Westfield, Iowa, and had lived in the Des Moines area most of his life.

He had also lived in Sioux City. He had been a carpet installer with Iowa Carpet One. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Carpet Floor Installers and the American Legion.

He had been active with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, LaDonna; three sons, Douglas of Austin, David of Des Moines, and Donald at home; three daughters, Lonnie Taylor of Des Moines, DeeAnna Taylor of Fort Hood, Texas, and Lisa Taylor at home; his mother. Edith Taylor of Sioux City; three brothers, Jack of Sergeant Bluff, Darrell of Sioux City, and Tony of Tea, S.D.; and six sisters, Delores Vanderlinden, Darlene Schwebach, Beverly Jolin, Cindy Whitmore and LouAnn Derochie, all of Sioux City, and Donna Bourret of Sioux Falls, S.D. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Carroll. Mary Lou Berthelsen Mary Lou Berthelsen, 78, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb.

17, 2003, at her residence. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m.

Friday, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:45 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Sharon R. Forman Sharon R. Jones Forman, 66, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb.

15, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chuck Rager officiating. The body will be cremated following the prayer service.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday in Dakota City Cemetery. Sharon was born Sept. 2, 1936, in Sioux City, the daughter of Howard E. and Lulu V.

(Reichmann) Curry. She married Earl E. Jones on Feb. 17. 1954, in South Sioux City.

He died July 17, 1979, in Sioux City. She then married John "Jack" Forman. He died July 9, 2001, in Sioux City. Survivors include a brother and his wife, Howard and Dorothy Curry Jr. of Ramsey, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Randall; four brothers, Ted, Bob, Andrew and Vernon; and a sister, Lulu McKinley. Betty E. Newton SOUTH SIOUX CITY Betty E. Newton, 89, of South Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kevin Roach officiating. Burial will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Newton was born Feb. 4, 1914, in Chicago, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Frank Kimball. She graduated from high school in Illinois. She married George F. Newton on July 6, 1943, in Crown Point, Ill. The couple lived in New York from 1956 to 1967, then they moved to South Sioux City.

George died March 29, 1979, in Sioux City. She was of the Baptist faith and a former vice president of the Eagles Auxiliary in Cortland, N. Y. Survivors include: a son and his wife, Larry and Lois of Brookings, a daughter, Maxine Haugen of South Sioux City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter.

Robert F. Kelley Robert Francis Kelley, 88, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St.

Joseph Catholic Church in Ellendale, Iowa, with the Rev. Michael T. Larkin officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m.

today at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Mr. Kelley was born in Sioux City on Oct. 6, 1914, the son of Charles and Margaret (Dunn) Kelley. He was a lifelong resident of the Sioux City area.

He married Ruby Christianson on Sept. 28, 1958, in South Sioux City. She died June 7, 1984, in Sioux City. He farmed in Plymouth County, Iowa, from 1940 until he retired in 1980. He was a former member of St.

Joseph Catholic Church in Ellendale and worked as a volunteer with the Woodbury County Action Agency. He is survived by a son and his wife, Timothy R. and Mary Kelley of Caldwell, Idaho; a stepdaughter and her husband, Sandra and Robert Wonderschied of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Adrianne Kelley of Minneapolis, Anna Kelley of Caldwell, and Camile Teusink of Marble Falls, Texas; a brother, Louis Kelley of Cherokee, Iowa; and a sister, Leone Parsons of Sioux City. He also was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be Marc Anfinson, Marty Anfinson, William Wilsbacher, Bill Goebel, Kim Wenzel and Karla Marx.

The Rev. Dr. Charles E. Mason The Rev. Dr.

Charles E. Mason, 92, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness. Memorial services will be p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church.

Private graveside services will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a Masonic service conducted by Tyrian Lodge 508 A.F. A.M.. all at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of NelsonBerger Northside Chapel. Bette Gunnink Bette (Thoma) Gunnink, 75, of Graham, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in Graham. Services were held at Potter's Funeral Home in Graham. Burial was in Tahoma Cemetery, Graham.

Area Mildred E. Bengtson ALTA, Iowa Mildred Eliza- beth (Kohlstedt) Bengtson, 92, of Dunwoody, formerly of Alta, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003. Mildred was born in Alta, located in Buena Vista, County, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 1910, the daughter of Alma and William C.

Kohlstedt. She was the first of 11 children (five girls and six boys). She attended a one country school on the corner of the same section where her farm home was When the Alta School was opened in 1917, she left the one-room school for the new Alta Public School. In high school, she was active in girls choir, drama and speech. She was an honor student every year of her schooling.

She started nurses training at The Old Francis Willard Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She returned to Iowa, moving to a farm west of Alta in 1939. She saw four of her brothers go off to World War II and all returned. She spent those years raising six children and canning all their food, which came from her huge garden. Mildred's husband, Karl, died in 1955, and she moved from the farm into Alta in 1957.

She worked for eight years at the Alta Hospital as a dietician and cook. She received her training in geriatric nursing. She then moved to Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and cared for elderly patients daily for eight years. She used this training and cared for individual patients in their homes until she reached the age of 80. She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta and served as an adult Sunday school teacher and women's leader for many years.

Upon moving to Sioux Rapids, she joined First Lutheran Church. One of her greatest joys was writing letters to family and friends. In 2001, she moved from her home in Sioux Rapids to live with her daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, Jerry Speck in Atlanta, Ga. Family members who were able to be present in Atlanta celebrated a service of Thanksgiving to God for her blessed life. Hymns selected by Mildred and sung for the memorial were, "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry." One sister, Geneva Wilson of Salem, survives her.

Also surviving are her six children, Jean Fullenworth of Storm Lake, Iowa, Dick Hodge and his wife, Kathryn of Dubois, Nancy Speck and her husband, Jerry of Dunwoody, Carolyn Michener and her husband, Ron of Climbing Hill, Iowa, Rosalind Zubradt and her husband, Richard of Fort Collins, and the Rev. Bill Bengtson and his wife, Sheri of San Diego, Calif. She had 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Mildred Bengtson will be long remembered for her caring concern for others, love of family and deep abiding faith. Memorials may be given to the church or charity of the donor's choice.

Hilda E. Steffen HARTINGTON, Neb. Hilda E. Steffen, 88, of Hartington died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare in Hartington.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m.

Thursday, with a rosary at 2 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Delbert M. Christiansen EMERSON, Neb.

Delbert M. Christiansen, 79, of Emerson died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Pender Community Hospital in Pender, Neb. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St.

Luke's Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Gretchen Ritola officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont, Neb. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayers service at 7 p.m., at Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson.

Delbert was born April 3, 1923, northwest of Plainview, to John and Celia (Rasmussen) Christiansen. He graduated from Ewing (Neb.) High School and later graduated with a bachelor's degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, He received a master's degree with a principal's endorsement from Chadron (Neb.) State College and a master's degree in guidance from the University of South Dakota. Upon graduation, he taught in Clay Center, Uehling, Taylor, Wausa, Creighton, Ponca, Wakefield and Emerson, Neb. He taught music and history and served as principal and guidance counselor. He retired from teaching in 1986, but did substitute teaching for several more years until his health would not permit it.

He sang in the Midland Lutheran College choir, touring and performing in many states. He taught adult education, was a member of the Emerson Scholarship committee, and was a member of the Steering Committee for North Central School Evaluation. He also was a member of the Nebraska State Education Association, was active in the Emerson Senior Center and was a former church council member. He directed and sang in church choirs most of his life. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, helping on the farm and entertaining his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his children and their spouses, Beth and Dennis Rohde of Emerson, Mark and Sheila Christiansen of Gretna, and Gail and Randy Mayberry of Allen, Texas; his grandchildren, Jason, Jill and Kristin Rohde, Joel Christiansen and his wife, Kayla, Blaine and Troy Christiansen, Aaron Mayberry and Sara and her husband, Samir Skopljak; a great-grandchild. Alec Christiansen; his brothers and their wives, Norman and Bonnie Christiansen of Burwell, and Jack and Carolyn Christiansen of Fremont, a sister, Marjorie Schindler of Ewing, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his stepchildren, Earlene Hradec, Connie Price, Allen Englehart and Loyd Englehart; 13 stepgrandchildren; and nine great-stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Harriet; a sister, Dorothy Hubel; and a brother-in-law, Jack Schindler. Bruce R.

Sheeler KINGSLEY, Iowa Bruce R. Sheeler, 77, of Kingsley died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa. Services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev.

Robert Blair officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Thursday, with the family present 3 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home. Bruce was born April 25, 1925, in Kingsley, the son of Glen and Vera (Pultz) Sheeler.

He grew up in the Kingsley area. He entered Akron Care Center in 1992. He survived by many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Betty. Hal Tierney Jr.

DANBURY, Iowa Harold J. "Hal" Tierney 72, of Danbury died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St.

Mary's Catholic Church Danbury. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Carlson-Frum Post 336 of Danbury. There will be no visitation. Lakeport Harriet Peuse ORANGE CITY, Iowa Harriet Peuse, 77, of Orange City passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Orange City Municipal Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Revs. Steven Vander Molen and Kevin De Young officiating.

Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Harriet June was born April 1, 1925, near Alton, lowa, the daughter of Charles and Cora (Vellinga) Kleinhesselink. She graduated from Newkirk High School in 1942.

During World War II, she helped her parents on the farm and was employed in Sioux City, preparing food for United States forces serving overseas. On Aug. 20, 1946, ried Henry Peuse in Maurice, Iowa. They farmed near Maurice for three years, then moved to a farm near Orange City, where they made their home for the rest of their lives. In October 2000, she became a resident of the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility.

She was a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed baking, sewing and gardening. She appreciated the friendship of Nelly Veldhuizen, Leola Te Grotenhuis and Marie Maassen. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Henry; four children and their spouses, Dr. Harlan and Godbertha Peuse of Pretoria, South Africa, Wanda and Gerry Noordhoek of Orange City, Gloria and Barry Weber of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Delwyn and Sharon Peuse of Lake Tahoe, seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Joe C. and Bertha Kleinhesselink of Orange City; two sisters, Berdina Vander Schaaf of Sheldon, Iowa, and Nelvina Franken of Sioux Center, Iowa; and a sisterin-law, Annabeth Kleinhesselink of Mesa, Ariz.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death a brother, Ring Kleinhesselink. Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility and the Parkinson's Association. Ignatius Stratman HARTINGTON, Neb. Ignatius Stratman, 87, of Hartington died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D.

today at Redig Funeral Alice K. Wenther JACKSON, Neb. Alice Katherine Wenther, 77, of Jackson died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m.

Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Dick Whiteing officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. today at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Visitation will resume 4 to 8 p.m. today, with an Altar Society and parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church.

Alice was born Aug. 1, 1925, in Newcastle, the daughter of Harry and Sophia (Luschen) Richards. She graduated from Newcastle High School. She was a teacher in rural Jackson before her marriage. She married Harvey C.

Wenther on Oct. 10, 1946. The couple farmed in the Jackson area for 43 years. They retired in 1989 and moved into Jackson. Harvey died Nov.

29, 2001, in Ponca, Neb. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Survivors include a son, Charles of Jackson; two daughters, Linda and her husband, Joe Rieger of South Sioux City, and Rochelle Johnson of Cheyenne, a sister and her husband. Mary Lou and Max Martinsen of Cherokee, Iowa; five grandchildren, Brian Rieger, Jennifer and her husband, Dan Pease, Laura Rieger, Katie and Michael Johnson; and a greatgrandson, Aidan Pease.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Vincent and Tom Richards; and a sister, Frances Hosing. Pallbearers will be Rich Hosing, Jim, Gary and Mark Richards, Blake Bostwick and Rick Schweers. Lucille C. Newman SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa Lucille Cecelia Newman, 84, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Lakes Regional HealthCare in Spirit Lake.

Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. The Rev. Ray Miller officiated. Burial was in Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements were under the direction of Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Lucille Cecelia Newman was born Oct. 9, 1918, in Sioux City, to George and Emily (Garland) Schnieder. She graduated from Hinton (Iowa) High School in 1935, where she was named the high school valedictorian. On April 14, 1943, she married George Newman in Sioux City.

They made their home in Sioux City and Vermillion, S.D., before moving to Spirit Lake in 1975. The couple had two children, Ronald and Janet. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She entered Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake in 1996. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband George; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Gary Noble of Rockwell City, Iowa; a son and his wife, Ronald and Jeanette Newman of Okoboji, Iowa; two grandsons, Matt and Jeremy; two granddaughters, Heather and her husband, Loren, and Joey; four greatgranddaughters; a brother, Don Schnieder; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Pallbearers were Merlyn and Ralph Newman, Duane Schnieder, Donald Norton, Werner Bueske and Lloyd Carstensen.
