rhe Sioux City Journal, Friday. April 10, 1981 3 Pickford offered M'side job coaches from the Siouxland area. Pickford, 51, coached at Cherokee and Central High before yielding to the lures and warmth of California in 1967. There he headed the gridiron program at Fountain Valley, a new high school about 35 miles south of Los Angeles, which he turned Into a state power. The school, with an enrollment of 4,100, was ranked No.

1 in 1978 with a 12-1 record. But surgery and poor health forced Pickford from the coaching ranks about a year and a half ago and he now serves as a driver's training instructor at the school. Lady Chiefs whip Sioux Empire twice Morningside used the big inning to sweep an Io-Kota softball doubleheader from Sioux Empire here Thursday, 13-3 in five innings and 11-1 in six. The Lady Chiefs, now 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, cut the first game short by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth on six hits, two errors and a walk. It featured RBI triples by Lois Liibbe and Cindy Gray.

In the nightcap, Morningside struck for six in the third highlighted by Luan McQuown's three-run homer. The double defeat dropped SE to 4-2 overall. Morningside will compete in this weekend's North Central Conference meet at Omaha beginning Saturday. FIRST GAME Sioux Empire 300 00 3 2 3 Morningside 213 07 13 13 1 Hawkinson has another 300 It seems that when 300 bowling games come in Sioux City, they come in bunches. Steve Hawkinson, one of the area's top keglers, got the season's ninth perfect game in the Federal League at Plaza Bowl Thursday.

It was the second at Plaza within a week Verlan Harris had one there last Friday. Harris' was the eighth perfecto of the 1980-81 campaign but only the second since mid-October. Hawkinson, who had two of the local campaign's 17 300s last season, got all strikes in the last game of a 787 series Thursday. He opened with 220 and followed with 267. The 787 is this season's second highest series here.

Terry Ballantyne's 800 ranks as No. 1. Ironically, Steve unseated his brother Jeff from the second position. Jeff Hawkinson rolled 777 in the fourth week of the '80-'81 season. Wednesday night, Mike Bolony, manager at Pack and Rail, posted a 710 series in the Wednesday Night Mixed League at Pack and Rail.

He had games of 194, 226 and 290. Wanda Gallery and Jolent Fertig; Sandy Winter and Lois Lllbbe 8ECON0QAME Morningside College officials will know today whether or not they have a new football coach. Athletic Director Don Protexter said he contacted Bruce Pickford by telephone at his Orange County, home late Thursday night "and he told me he'd make his decision known tomorrow (today)," Protexter said. The Chiefs have been without a head football coach since March 18 when Lyle Eidsness, who held the Chiefs' post just one year, left to accept the head grid job at Augustana, his alma mater. "We have offered the job to Pickford," said Protexter, "and, naturally, we're hoping he'll accept.

But If not, we have other good men on the list," He said 27 had applied for the position, mostly Briar Cliff sets summer camps Briar Cliff College basketball Coach and Athletic Director Ray Nacke has announced the 1981 schedule for boys basketball camps being offered by the college. Morningside took third in the NCC holiday tournament and finished second to North Dakota in the loop's post-season meet.
