"I'm sure that everyone here he said, "be they student, parent, husband or wife, is asking themselves the question, 'Where do I go from Obviously, there is no magic answer. There is, however, a magic word, a word that almost by itself will shape your destiny and that of everyone here tonight. This magic, powerful word is attitude." Schaffhausen told the students to develop not only a positive attitude about themselves but also about everything in their lives.

He also told them that the way they would use their time will be an important factor in career and professional duties. Schaffhausen also discussed the importance of planning. "From personal experience," he said, "and in hundreds of conversations with other people, most of us can be successful wherever we live if we would just do a little Schaffhausen talked too about "speaking the other person's language." Crane, 85, Vermillion, died Thursday at Dakota Hospital here of brief illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wagner-Iverson Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Harlan will officiate.

Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery. Mrs. Crane, the former Anna Lundberg, was born Sept. 24, 1891, at Oslo, Norway. She came to the United States when a child.

She was married April 13, 1907, at Elk Point. She was a resident of Vermillion 70 years. She was employed by the University of South Dakota in the housekeeping department, retiring approximately 21 years ago. Mr. Crane died in 1950.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Olson of Vermillion, Mrs. Alphonse (Evelyn) Girard of Elk Point and Mrs. Fred (Marjorie) Welsh of Vassar, 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Mrs.

Herbert Poe, 72, of Downey, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday i in a Downey hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Poe, the former Gladys Miller, was born March 4, 1903, in Woodbine, Iowa, where she was reared. She was married to Herbert Poe Dec. 18, 1919, in Omaha.

The couple moved to Sioux City after their marriage. Mr. Poe died Aug. 27, 1955, in Sioux City. Mrs.

Poe moved to Downey from Sioux City 17 years ago. She was past worthy matron of Isis Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Sioux City, past Iowa state president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and past state president of the Iowa Rainbow Division Auxiliary. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in Sioux City. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Marianna) Clark of Downey; a son, Herbert B.

of Cypress, four sisters, Mrs. Violet Helm of Omaha, Mrs. Daisy Perry and Mrs. Erma Magnusson, both of Yuba City, and Mrs. Tyna Webb of Meridian, seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Kounkel, 59, 4420 Van Buren died Thursday in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. Mr. Kounkel was born June 3, 1917, at Le Mars, Iowa. He married Juanita F. Hinrichs Aug.

29, 1939, at Hinton. Mr. and Mrs. Kounkel moved to Sioux City in 1942. Mr.

Kounkel was employed as a millwright by Sioux Tools Co. from 1943 until he retired due to ill health in 1975. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Survivors include the widow; a son, Dean of Fort Dodge, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Steven (Lynn) Fleckenstein of Hinton, Iowa; two brothers, James of Fort Ripley, and Sam of Auburn, two sisters, Mrs.

Knute (Florence) Brumberg and Mrs. Edith Dryburgh, both of Brainerd, and four grandchildren. The Nelson-Berger Northside Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. Miss Erma Breon Miss Erma Breon, 62, a resident of Billy Sunday Retirement Home, 6120 Morningside died Friday morning at the home after a long illness. Miss Breon was born June 20, 1914, at Des Moines.

She worked as a babysitter 1 for several years. She was a member of the Open Bible Church at Holly Springs, Iowa. Survivors include a brother, John R. Breon of Sioux City. The Rutledge-Gulsrud Funeral Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mathilda Blanchard Mrs. Mathilda House Blanchard, 90, of Green Acres Nursing Home, died Friday at the nursing home. Mrs. Blanchard, the former Mathilda Maron, was born July 9, 1886, in Tulare, S.D.

She moved to Sioux City at the age of 16. Mrs. Blanchard moved to the nursing home about three years ago. She had been employed as a cook in several Sioux City restaurants. Mrs.

Blanchard was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Clarence House of Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Wayene (Helen) Hitchcock, of Dakota City, Mrs. Florence Swolley of Sioux City and Mrs. Edith Hellman of Council Bluffs; 14 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending at the W. Harry Christy Funeral Home in Morningside David C. Davies David C. Davies, 78, 3119 Garretson, a teacher at East Junior High School for 23 years, died Thursday in a Dallas, hospital. Mr.

Davies was born in Filmore County, Nov. 4, 1898. He moved to South Dakota with his family as a child. He was graduated from Lime, S.D., High School. He moved to Sioux City in 1919.

He attended Morningside College. He married Frances M. Arnold June 28, 1922, at Fremont, Neb. He received his B.A. degree from Morningside College and an M.A.

from the University of South Dakota. He did graduated degree work at the University of Kansas. Mr. Davies was superintendent of schools at Pleasanton, Meservey and Thornton before he moved to Sioux City. Mr.

Davies retired in 1964. 13, 1912, near Dakota City. He was a lifelong resident of the Dakota City area. He attended rural grade schools and South Sioux City High School and was graduated from Morningside College. During World War II, Mr. Beermann served from 1942 to 1945 with the 601st Ordnance Battalion in the African and European theaters.

Area Obituaries Ludvig Johnson BERESFORD, S.D. Ludvig Johnson, 86, Beresford, died Thursday in a Sioux Falls hospital of long illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Beresford. The Rev.

Richard Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of the Wass Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson was born April 29, 1890, in Norway. He came to the United States and the Beresford area in 1911.

He married Nellie Hoff at Sioux City Sept. 20, 1919. She died Dec. 24, 1963. Mr.

Johnson worked on a farm in the Beresford area a few years before farming for himself east of Beresford. Survivors include several nieces and nephews in Norway. Mrs. George M. Crane IDA GROVE, Iowa Mrs.

Adam Bieschke, 79, of Ida Grove, died Thursday at a nursing home in Odebolt. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Ida Grove. The Rev. Harry Dailey will officiate.

Burial will be in Odebolt Cemetery. The Rev. Victor Kollash will conduct graveside rites. The Farber Otteman Funeral Home of Odebolt will be in charge. Mrs.

Bieschke, the former Regina Thies, was born Oct. 20, 1897 in Ida County. She was married April 27, 1927 in Ida Grove. She operated a greenhouse from her residence. Mr.

Bieschke died in 1953. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Genevieve Boating Safety Course Starts on Wednesday A nine-week course for the public in boating safety, skills and seamanship will be offered in the Dakota County Courthouse, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Classes will meet in the lower floor meeting room of the courthouse. Interested persons may register at the Dakota County Civil Defense Agency or at the boat show today and Sunday at Atokad Park. Persons wanting additional information may telephone 987-3424. The registration fee of $3.95 will cover the cost of the materials to be used. The classes will be conducted under the sponsorship of the Dakota County Civil Defense Agency and the U.S.

He married Nell Popma Jan. 21, 1909 at Orange City. The couple farmed in the Newkirk area until 1946, retired and moved to Orange City. He resided in a nursing home at Rock Valley since July of 1976. Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs.

Arie (Winifred) Bomgaars of Cherokee and Mrs. Henry (Kathryn) Bomgaars of Orange City; a son, Clifford of Newkirk; 12 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Mrs. John (Anna) Van Oort of Orange City and one brother, William of Orange City. Charles Walker Sr. WALTHILL, Neb.

Charles Walker 81, of Walthill, died Wednesday in the hospital at Winnebago. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Community Building at Macy. Henry Dick will be in charge. Burial will be in the Omaha Indian Cemetery at Macy under direction of the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa.

Mr. Walker was born May 3, 1895, at Macy. He married Elizabeth Lyons in January of 1945 at Macy. He was a member of the Native American Church. Survivors include the widow; five sons, Clarence of Omaha, Charles Jr.

Kirchner, 18 Correctionville, Iowa Morningside Seniors Plan Recital Sunday In 1946, when he returned from the service, Mr. Beermann organized the Dakota County Young Republicans. Later, he served as chairman of the Dakota County Republican Central Committee for six years. In 1960, Mr. Beermann defeated Rep.

Larry Brock of Wakefield, to represent the state's Third District. Following the 1961 congressional redistricting, he defeated incumbent Phil Weaver for the Republican nomination in the new First District. In the general election of that year, he defeated Clair Callan of Odell for a second term. Mr. Beermann served on the House Agriculture Committee during both terms.

Mr. Beermann was defeated in 1964 during his bid for a third term in Congress. In 1972, he returned to politics by winning a seat on the board of the Nebraska Public Power District. He was re-elected to the board last November. He also served as a Reagan delegate to the 1976 Republican National Convention.

In addition to his many civic activities, Mr. Beermann was a member of the board of directors of the Nebraska division of the American Cancer Society. For six years he served as a member of the board of directors of the Nebraska Synod, Lutheran Church in America. Morningside College seniors Arlene Jarvis from St. Albans, Vt.

and Lorenda Hinds from Stratford, Iowa, will present a joint recital at 4 p.m. Sunday in Eppley Auditorium. The public is invited at no charge. Ms. Jarvis has been a member of Morningside's Concert and Oratorio Choirs, Chamber Singers and Opera Workshop.

She has been a member of Mu Phi Epsilon music sorority and is past secretary-treasurer of Student Music Educators National Conference (SMENC). She has appeared as a soloist in the December, 1975 presentation of Bach's Cantata Number 140. Her operatic roles have included Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Medium, Electricina and the opera currently in rehearsal, Gianni Schicchi. She has been a past member of the choir at Grace United Methodist Church where she appeared as a soloist in the Vivaldi Gloria. She has studied with Jan Jewett and currently studies with Harlan Buss.

Ms. Hinds has been a member of the Morningside Concert Choir for four years and toured England with the organization in spring, 1975. She is a member of Student Iowa State Education Association (SISEA) and SMENC and has held office in SMENC. She is a member and past officer of Mu Phi Epsilon music sorority. She was the recipient of the Phi Zeta music scholarship her sophomore year and won honorable mention in the Sammons competition in her junior year.
