Ten dogleg holes are the reason. A "dogleg" is a hole which curves or bends to the right or left around some sort of obstacle such as water, trees, out of bounds, sand traps or just rough. If it is possible to place your drive on the correct side of the fairway or cut across the corner of the dogteg many yards can be cut off the distance. The rough was not high this year like it will be for the Open so you could cut the corners without worrying too much about stopping in the rough. Greens Are Challenge The 6ther distinctive features are the shape and contour of the greens.

Most putts of any length at all break in at least two directions and there isn't such a thing as a straight putt. Although the greens are large they are irregular In shape allowing traps to be placed so the hole can be "hid" on necks of the greens. They are also built up above the level of the ground making chips and pitches difficult. There are only two holes which I feel are poor holes and they are Nos. 9 and 18.

Both are bad for the same reason and that is because the fairway slopes away from you at the dogleg where your drive lands making it nearly impossible to keep your ball out of a trap or the rough. This year it was possible to cut the corner on each hole but with long rough that would not be possible so the holes would not reward a good tee shot. Usually for an Open the course has to be toughened up adding traps, building new tees, and lowering the par by changing a couple of par five holes to long par four holes. For the most part this won't be necessary at Hazeltine. Normally the Open courses are par 70 but this one will probably remain par 72.

About all they will need is higher rough. This Is a real championship test and will be good for golf in this area. rr, hi oh bl seven straight games, followed Francisco (McCormick 14-5 ond Clorke 2b 4 0 10 Cmonerls ss 4 0 0 0 Morlchof 14-9) ot New York (Fisher 7-121 White 3b 5 0 0 0 Donoldsn 2b 5 1 1 0 months on a goodwill tour of Europe.
